Type Locality and Naming

SE Tarim Basin. The Hongliuquan Fm was named by Feng Mingdao et al. in 1981. The type section is situated at Hongliuquan Gully at Altun Mts. in Ruoqiang County, Xinjiang Weiwuerzhu Zizhiqu (Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region). Middle formation in the Baxkorgan Gr.

Synonym: (红柳泉组)


Lithology and Thickness

The Hongliuquan Fm is a formation-level stratigraphic unit, occurring in the middle part of Baxkorgan Gr. It is composed of dark-grey and greyish chloritic-sericite-quartz schist, muscovite-chlorite-quartz schist and thin-layered quartzite. Lower part is dominated by schist sandwiched with quartzite; while in the Upper part, the quartzite is dominant and sandwiched with meta-sandstone or gneiss. It is recorded to 643 m thick.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

The base conformably rests on the underlying Zhasikansaihe Fm.

Upper contact

The top is conformably overlain by the Beiketan Fm.

Regional extent

SE Tarim Basin. It is distributed mainly around Qiemo and Ruoqiang on the north slope of Altun Mts., and more completely exposed along Zhasikansai River east of Beiketan.
